The Work of Hype
Most Christians today, when they hear the word “Worship,” the first thing that comes to their mind is music. Music is a great form of worship that helps people to engage and to motivate repentance. Music can be very touching to a person’s heart / soul. But what I don’t like about music in the church, especially in modern day Charistmaticism, is when to the person worshiping, that’s really the only motivation for their worship.
Have you ever seen a congregation worshiping to a slow song, or even a fast one at that, and the loudness / intensity of the music corresponds to how passionately the congregation is engaging? I swear that I’ve seen almost every week at my church, we’re singing. *” . . . and all will see how great, how great, is our God!”
Build–Build–BUILD–BUILD!!!!!! (the words remain the same,) yet on the next down beat, 100 or so hands shoot up.
Now tell me if you don’t think that the worship displayed there was more about the music than the holy spirit. You can get this same effect by going to a rock concert that has touching lyrics. To me, it seems that in the Christian church, it’s become more about the work of hype then the work of Christ.

Music has the power to affect emotion. You know that. And the Bible is pretty clear that we are to worship God WITH our emotions (not because of our emotions – but with them). So if the music gets huge and moves people to an emotional outburst where they lift their hands in worship to God – where did that go wrong? (Scripture examples of worshiping God with our emotions: Romans 12:11-12, Ps. 47:1, Phil. 4:4, Ps. 46:10, Hab. 2:20)
